Queen rearing follows a strict biological timeline: graft larvae on Day 0, cells are capped by Day 5, virgins emerge Day 11-12, orientation flights Day 14-17, mating flights Day 18-24, and egg laying begins Day 25-28. This planner generates a complete schedule from your target grafting date, including cell builder prep, mating nuc setup, and introduction windows.
Need: 36 nucs total
Choose your best colony for grafting larvae. Look for productivity, temperament, disease resistance, and honey production. Verify the queen is laying well.
Set up starter colony: make queenless, pack with nurse bees, add pollen and syrup. Use at least 5 frames of bees.
Prepare 36 mating nucs with 2-3 frames of bees and brood each. Include a frame of honey and pollen. Place in mating yard.
Graft 30 larvae from breeder colony. Use larvae under 24 hours old (just hatched). Graft into prepared cell cups with royal jelly. Place in cell starter immediately.
Carefully check cell starter. Count accepted cells. Expected acceptance rate: 60-80% for experienced grafters. Do not disturb cells more than necessary.
Move accepted cells from starter to finisher colony. Finisher should be queenright with excluder above. Place cells above excluder.
Queen cells should be sealed/capped by now. Do not disturb. The cells will continue to develop inside their wax capsules.
Distribute capped queen cells to mating nucs. One cell per nuc. Handle cells gently, keep them warm and upright. Install in 36 prepared nucs.
Queens emerge from cells. Do not open mating nucs during this period. Queens need time to harden and orient.
Virgin queens begin orientation flights. Weather dependent. Queens need clear, warm days (above 65F) with light winds.
Queens take mating flights to drone congregation areas. Requires 2-3 successful mating flights. Queens mate with 12-20 drones. Weather is critical during this period.
Inspect mating nucs for eggs. A mated queen should be laying within 3-5 days of successful mating. Mark queens if desired.
Mated, laying queens are ready for introduction to production colonies. Use candy-release cages for best acceptance rates. Allow 3-5 days for release.
Timeline based on standard queen development biology. Weather delays during mating flights can extend the schedule by 1-2 weeks. Best success rates occur during peak drone season (May-August in most regions).

From grafting to a mated, laying queen takes approximately 28-35 days. The biological timeline is: graft Day 0, cells capped Day 5, emergence Day 11-12, mating flights Day 18-24, and first eggs Day 25-28. Weather delays during mating can extend this by 1-2 weeks.
Assess honey bee colony strength from frame count, brood pattern quality, bee coverage percentage, and population indicators to determine pollination readiness and overall hive health.
Score potential apiary yard locations on forage quality, water access, vehicle access, sun exposure, wind protection, pesticide risk, and neighbor proximity for optimal hive placement.
