Queen Rearing Fundamentals

Queen quality directly impacts colony performance. Commercial operations should requeen annually or biannually for optimal production.

Queen development timeline (from grafting):

  • Day 0: Graft larvae under 24 hours old into queen cups
  • Day 5: Cells are capped by nurse bees
  • Day 11-12: Virgin queens emerge
  • Day 14-17: Orientation flights begin
  • Day 18-24: Mating flights (weather dependent)
  • Day 25-28: First eggs laid by mated queen

  • Best practices:

  • Select breeder colonies with top genetics (VSH, hygienic behavior, productivity)
  • Graft when drone populations are abundant (April-August in most US regions)
  • Stock mating nucs with 2-4 frames of bees 24 hours before introducing cells
  • Check for laying 2-3 weeks after emergence
  • Mark queens using the international color code for age tracking

  • Acceptance rates: Virgin introduction averages 50-70%. Mated queen introduction averages 80-95%. Use candy-release cages over 3-5 days for best results.
